Pauline Dundas, Lead Hepatology and Viral Hepatitis Nurse Specialist, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, shared experience of issuing self-testing kits, which was initiated during the pandemic and has been continued since. She explained the routes of distribution for the kits and how people are supported to use them correctly. The results have been impressive, with the vast majority of kits being used properly and returned. The DBST model has also been used to obtain samples for assessing sustained virologic response, which has been particularly useful for patients who are reluctant or unable to attend follow-up appointments. This model of testing has been particularly useful in the Grampian region due to its extensive geographical spread and has demonstrated clear benefits in identifying patients with hepatitis C and streamlining the pathway to treatment in difficult to reach populations.
Pauline Dundas is the Lead Hepatology Nurse Specialist and Viral Hepatitis Clinical Lead NHS Grampian. She has worked in this field for over 20 years and manages the liver nurses and the drug and alcohol liaison team. The clinics undertaken by the liver nurses include management of decompensated liver disease, jaundice clinic, viral hepatitis clinics, NAFLD clinics, fibroscan clinics and hepatoma screening clinics.
